Wisdom Teeth Recovery, Day by Day: What's Normal and What's Dry Socket

Dr. Maya Lindstrom · · 2 min

Wisdom teeth recovery has a predictable shape: three rough days, a turning point, then a quiet week of healing you’re not allowed to disturb. Knowing the shape is what keeps day two from feeling like an emergency.

The timeline

Day 0 — surgery day. Bite gauze 30–45 minutes at a stretch, swap as needed; oozing that tints saliva pink is normal all day. Start ice (20 on, 20 off), start soft-cold food (yogurt, smoothies by spoon), start prescribed meds before the numbness fully lifts.

Days 1–2 — the peak. Swelling and jaw stiffness crest around 48–72 hours; bruising may bloom along the jawline. Normal: dull throbbing managed by meds, low-grade temperature under 100.4°F, awful breath. Keep sleeping with your head elevated.

Day 3 — the turn. Swelling starts down; switch ice for warm compresses to loosen the jaw. Begin gentle salt-water rinses if your surgeon said so — let it fall out of your mouth, no spitting.

Days 4–7 — boring on purpose. Soft foods graduate (eggs, pasta, soft rice); stitches dissolve or come out; the jaw reopens gradually. Most people work from a desk by day 3–4 and skip the gym until day 7.

Weeks 2–6. The holes close from the bottom up; food debris in sockets is annoying, not dangerous — rinse, don’t poke.

The three rules of the first 72 hours

No straws, no smoking, no spitting. All three suck or blast the clot out of the socket, and the clot is the healing.

Dry socket: the one complication to know cold

Around days 2–4, if pain suddenly worsens instead of easing — a raw ache radiating to the ear, a socket that looks empty or bone-white, a foul taste — that’s dry socket. It isn’t dangerous, but it’s miserable and it doesn’t self-resolve quickly: the office packs a medicated dressing and the relief is nearly immediate. Worsening pain after day three is never “just healing”; it’s a same-day phone call.

Fever over 101, spreading swelling after day three, pus, or numbness that outlasts a day also earn the call — infection and nerve follow-ups are rare and very treatable early.
